The 2nd Online RIEC International Workshop on Spintronics

The 2nd Online RIEC International Workshop on Spintronics – Computing with Spintronics will be held.

The workshop is free of charge, but registration is necessary from the website above. Registered participants can access the on-demand talks and the live session to be held on April 6th, 2023, 17:30-19:00 (JST), 10:30-12:00 (CEST). The on-demand talks will be released from late March.

Professor Johan Åkerman, a professor

Professor Johan Åkerman, a professor of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, has been appointed to a post at the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC) of Tohoku University through a Cross Appointment System, and has been named the “Professor, University Research Lead”.

He is going to head up a new laboratory “Innovative Spintronic Device Laboratory” and Professor Shunsuke Fukami will support the startup of the lab.

Our collaborative research with UC Santa Barbara and University of Messina entitled “Experimental evaluation of simulated quantum annealing with MTJ-augmented p-bits” by A. Grimaldi, K. Selcuk, N. A. Aadit, K. Kobayashi, Q. Cao, S. Chowdhury, G. Finocchio, S. Kanai, H. Ohno, S. Fukami and K. Y. Camsari was presented in the 68th Annual IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM2022) on December 6th in San Francisco.

Professor Fukami was awarded the 2022 Achievement Award of the Magnetic Society of Japan for his achievement of “Development of new-functional spintronics devices and its application to unconventional computing”. Congratulations!

Dr. Samik DuttaGupta (received Ph.D. in 2016) resigned from the Assistant Professor of CSIS and left for India to be assigned to an Associate Professor of  Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. We wish you great success!

Best English Presentation Award in the JSAP Spring Meeting

T. Uchimura (M2) was awarded the Best English Presentation Award in the JSAP Spring Meeting. The title of the presentation was “Observation of non-collinear antiferromagnetic domain structure in epitaxial Mn3Sn thin films”. Congratulations!

Professor Fukami was selected to the Inamori Research Institute for Science (InaRIS) Fellowship Program. The accepted research topic is “Induction of “intelligence” in materials by artificial control and its development to computing”.

IEEE Magnetics Society’s 2022 Achievement Award

Professor Hideo Ohno received the IEEE Magnetics Society’s 2022 Achievement Award for “fundamental discoveries of spintronic phenomena and their applications in memory and computing technologies.”

Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences

Professor Ohno, the current president of Tohoku University, has been added to the International Fellows of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.

67th Annual IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM2021)

We present “Fast Switching Down to 3.5 ns in Sub-5-nm Magnetic Tunnel Junctions Achieved by Engineering Relaxation Time” (by B. Jinnai, J. Igarashi, T. Shinoda, K. Watanabe, S. Fukami, and H. 1st Online RIEC International Workshop on Spintronics

 1st Online RIEC International Workshop on Spintronics

K. Kobayashi (M1) is awarded the Best Poster Award in The 5th Symposium for The Core Research Clusters for Materials Science and Spintronics for his presentation entitled “Physical mechanism governing sigmoid curves of superparamagnetic tunnel junctions”, and K. Kishi (M1) is awarded the Poster Award for his presentation entitled “Effect of spin-orbit torque on non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn”.

Young Scientist Award

Y. Yamane (Assistant Professor) is awarded the Young Scientist Award of the Physical Society of Japan for his research entitled “Theoretical study on electric response of noncollinear antiferromagnets”.

Prof. Fukami’s talk entitled “Electrical Manipulation of Non-Collinear Antiferromagnet” given at the On-line SPICE-SPIN+X Seminar held on July 21  was posted on YouTube.

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics

A roadmap article “Roadmap of spin-orbit torques” by Q. Shao, P. Li, L. Liu, H. Yang, S. Fukami et al. was published in the Early Access area of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics.
